Services Performed
- Scanned vehicle for related faults and found codes for misfire, o2 sensor, intake manifold tumble flap and throttle body. The misfire is a soft misfire and could indicate a mechanical issue and needs to be diagnoses first. Need to visually inspect the throttle body and wiring.
- We performed a relative compression test by disconnecting the coils and fuel pump and cranked the engine and found no audible indications that there is a mechanical issue causing low compression. We reassembled and ran the engine and performed inductive monitoring of the ignition coils and found cylinder 5 was not working. We moved cylinder 5 coil to cylinder 2 and ran the engine and found the engine ran much worse. Cylinder 2 is now misfiring indicating a faulty ignition coil but cylinder 5 is now showing erratic operation. We removed the spark plugs from 2 and 5 and found #5 spark plug gap was packed with carbon. We also found that the spark plug gap on 2 and 5 was .047" with a specification of .028" – spark plugs are worn. We looked inside cylinder 5 with a video scope and found a staggering amount of carbon buildup on the combustion chamber area of the cylinder head and a chunk of carbon has dislodged and is sitting on the piston. Possible failing piston oil scraper rings, poor fuel quality and/or injector spray patter. >>Recommend perform engine crankcase service and an oil change. We recommend to pour in a can of BG 44K fuel injection cleaner additive and fill the tank. Finally, we recommend semi regular fill ups with premium brand fuels like Chevron or Texaco. We replaced the spark plugs in 2 and 5. Reinstalled old coil in 2 and replaced the coil in cylinder 5. We started the engine and found it now runs smooth. We replace the remaining spark plugs. >We removed the intake tube to visually inspected the throttle body and found no issue. We manually operated the throttle body but did not notice any severe restrictions. We suspect the throttle motor brushes or bearings are worn. >>Replace throttle body.
